Competition

I am listening to Radio National discussing competition. Again it is the competition discussion. And as always I am caught on this one. I love excellence. Great to see a wonderful musician. Always amazing to see a great athlete. And Jeff Bond (General manager learning and development Richmond Football Club and formerly Head of Psychology at the Australia Institute of Sport) says there are three things that compel people. He says wanting independence, wanting affiliation with others or wanting achievement. These are the three compelling influences he says when you look at the meta research about competition. I wouldn’t disagree. These three things pop up repeatedly. Though a friend who is involved in mentoring in the business sector would add: influence (that is, wanting to exert influence over the world or others).

Jeff also says that motivation is about being successful and “…for most people, that’s about winning.” This is a pretty old discussion. And yet I think it continues to be an important one.
